GO TO SCHOOL, GET YOUR GCSES

OUT YESTERDAY!

It's been over two years since Dizzee Rascal released his acclaimed second album, 'Showtime', and four since his Mercury Prize winning debut, 'Boy In Da Corner'. For an artist as prolific as Dizzee, that's a long time to be away.

Now 2007 and 'Maths + English', his third, is finally ready (released June 4th). Preceding that is the new single, 'Sirens'. It's a breathtaking return (NME and The Guardian Guide agree as both made it their single of the week) and it has an equally unforgettable video. 'Sirens' is available on cd, download, 7" and 12".

May showers Down

The last few weeks have been busy, hence why there has been no fresh writing since Easter…

Hoodstars are doing big things, watch this space. This month we have bits and pieces as the flavour starts to hot up for summer! We are about to diversify, a little bit.

The rave scene in the ends has changed up, west camp are having the first of many open air events in Acton Park next month. Hammersmith Palais has now closed down for good meaning that a lot of people are left with no where to go.

On the up side there is always Fulham, Chiswick, Ealing and Notting Hill Gate. Notting hill gate was the scene of the first “Be” – a two shoes promotion event. Before I go any deeper, I want you to stretch your mind as far back as Mac fm and ice fm. Think of the renegade boys, and think of Goodness. Not hard is it.

I hear you asking why? Goodness is half of the promotional outfit; the other fifty percent is DJ En-I from Uptown records. Anyway. More about that in a while.

This month I got to sample the free mixtape from young dots myspace, an O.G. sampler courtesy of NE, a DJ Karma funky house mix picked up at BE and a mix cd from Dilemma aka Dile M for danger (Artila). Alongside this we got a taster of Wolf’s “You will go blind if you look in my head”. Watch out for volume 2 coming very soon. Hoodstars also graced Dj Sketche’s show on manic.

On the subject of radio shows, the Legacy show is set to return later on this month with full force. That’s SKFM.ORG.UK. Thursdays 8 till 10 baby. So without further ado – lets get onto this months mixtape madness.

Above is a link for a Summertime funky house mix by DJ Karma, its another free download so get your hands on it as quick as possible. If you like it then you can catch this guy on myspace at www.myspace.com/thegoodvybesessions.
For those who don’t know about DJ Karma, he is a under rated DJ from the west of London. He describes himself as young and focused with a musical age beyond his natural age.

DJ Karma has been digging in the crates, car boot sales, and second hand records shops since the age of 14. The first pair of decks to grace this djs hands were a pair of soundlabs, DLP32s to be exact (I can relate!).

He began his career in the industry at a local record shop on askew road, otherwise known as “face the music”, then went on to play at house parties, school events, and obviously pirate radio sets. Karma has since moved onto a pair of 1210’s now at the age of 20 he is becoming a dj to watch out for in the underground house scene.

Like any other type of karma you get what you give back, so the Karma must be feeling the “good vybe”.

Two shoes are better than one.

By now you should be fully into the first few mixes from karma, So while you are up and away, ill take you to the first of many events from a new promotions company called 2Shoes or twoshoes.

Notting Hill Gate is the upmarket uptown between the central london area and the rest of london, it is also home to the Blag Club. Slightly small but homely, with enough space for 150 people. Slightly small but homely, with enough space for 150 people. 2 shoes had us wall to wall, then there was the tombola.

Music policy was as urban as you can get with old school garage, hip hop and funky house on rotation from both En-I and Goods delivered the goods and keep the crowd moving till home time.

The promotions company are running more than nightclub events; watch out for the PROEVO6 soccer tournament coming soon to west London. As well as this the company is looking for confident, presentable, positive people to run guest lists for forthcoming events.

If you think you can bring high numbers of positive people to '2 Shoes' events, get in contact via the myspace - www.myspace.com/2shoesevents

Oh yeah, the pictures from the night will be up soon enough.

If you don’t know Young Dot, then you may have been asleep for the last few years or just unaware of some of the beats that he has provided to the scene. Rewind back to practice hours II and catch him on the essentials section.

One hundred percent Jamaican, this is the Doctor Dre of South London, hailing from SW9 area and parring in Stockwell and Brixton. Dot is the newest member of the hoodstars movement. This piece of work is prior to his official inception into the group, but is by no means a lesser work.

The line up includes Hoodstars from the south London area such as Doctor, Zero, Little Dee, AsherD, Jendor, Fugee and many more.

The track selection is a good example of what Young Dot has to offer as both an emcee and a producer. From a production point of view, the favourite tracks in the office were – (in no particular order) if I while out, Cats on my line and Get out of the hood. Lyrics-wise, Get out of the Hood and Cats on my line were the to favourite tracks along with I been broke.

As a hood emcee, Dot seems to be torn between a benevolent force and a less positive energy, I violate, contrasts with the message put across by get out of the hood as do dirty south salute and got my head screwed on. However, even through the slightly mixed message Dot seems to be calling out to the Hood, the ends, the bits, asking them to be more aware. Its not a message saying be as righteous as you can, but it is saying wake up and become conscious.
What is FIP?

Original Gangsters

The term OG is probably best known as the tagline of ICE-T’s studio album from the early ninties (get to know). OG’s are a collective of artists mainly from south london including members of the old essentials line up such as Jendor, Dot and NE. as well as this we have a host of other hoodstars such as Blacks, Stormar, Pro and Big philly.

I managed to link up with Jendor and NE at the last dirty canvas, and I picked up a sample cd with some music from the OG’s.

This is one of the tracks off the sampler – http://www.mediafire.com/?7lx4mzpssmx

the rest are at the myspace
http://www.myspace.com/theogmovement - more to com from these guys later on next month.

Sketch'E ft. Hoodstars

(17-05-07) Part 2.mp3

Hoodstars hit a DJ Sketche set on maniac last Thursday, the audio is up already. The audio quality leaves a bit to be desired but apart from that it’s a good set, you can find it on the rwdmag forum, but if you cant here is a link!

Urban Tales

Urban Tales

was written with the intention of grasping a piece of lower working class U.K. society and putting it in writing and pictures so that people can really see the conditions that individuals such as my self and some of my peers are living in on a daily basis and the mind state that some of the younger individuals have because they see it as a means of escaping the burdens and problems of their everyday life.

The areas that Urban Tales focuses on are crime, drugs, love, political propaganda, teenage pregnancies, unemployment and everyday situations not only in the black communities but in many lower working class households in the inner cities up and down the country but is written from my time living in London and Birmingham. I feel as much as racism is a problem in this country that does not seem to be going away no matter how many innocent people are killed or how many campaigns the government put out, however it is the divide between the classes that is the main problem.

The rich seem to be getting richer while the less fortunate seem to be stuck in a position of “sink or swim” to maintain a suitable position of living for themselves and their families.

With the recent emergence of excellent talent that the U.K. is showing both with musically with Grime, Indie, RnB, Rock, U.K. Hip Hop and films Urban Tales is a window of insight.

Bringing Buff back

http://www.buff.uk.net/

Last year we brought you news of a film festival that would break all boundaries, This year it is back bigger than ever… BUFF is the British Urban Film Festival. The showcase behind BUFF Enterprises Ltd:

If you are an independent filmmaker in the UK this festival is a perfect place for you to showcase what you do. BUFF was created to increase the amount of opportunity for the next generation of filmmakers in the UK. The company has created a whole brand around the word BUFF….

The website is a lot more detailed and even gives a history of the word Buff, from the original meaning till today’s street slang. In addition, it tells you how to get involved in “the search for Buff” – an urban sort of mr and miss universe.

As well as this the film festival is backed by serious names and filmmakers including Julius Amedume (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Amedume) and British actors including Asher D & Troy Titus Adams. As well as these names the ITV are involved in the project and this has helped the more educative and charitable side of the organisation to grow. 4front gave manor-logs a national screen and as well as this FFISH is a programme in schools to promote filmmaking and media.

Keep checking the website and the myspace for regular updates….
